EDV 2027 (DV Lottery 2027) Opening Date in Nepal: Is the Form Open?
Is the EDV 2027 form open? Not yet: a US appeals court paused the 1 November opening. The latest for Nepal, the new US$1 fee, passport rule and what to prepare.
The EDV 2027 opening date is one of the most searched questions in Nepal right now, and the answer is disappointing: the DV Lottery 2027 (DV-2027, the "green card lottery") entry form has not opened, and there is no new date. A US judge had told the State Department to open registration by 1 November 2026, but on 29 October 2026 a federal appeals court put that order on hold (Fragomen; Bloomberg Law).
Latest, 5 November 2026: still closed. No new date has been given, and no court has ruled again since the 29 October pause (Envoy Global; Goeschl Law). This page will be updated as soon as that changes.
What happened to the DV lottery 2027, step by step
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| November 2025 | The State Department announces changes to the DV-2027 entry period |
| December 2025 | The State Department pauses the Diversity Visa programme, DV-2026 visa processing included |
| 19 August 2026 | Red Eagle Law, a US immigration law firm, sues because DV-2027 has not opened |
| 14 October 2026 | A federal judge in California orders registration to open by 1 November 2026, for 30 days |
| 29 October 2026 | The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals pauses that order, so DV-2027 stays shut |
(Fragomen; Bloomberg Law)
The pause began after a Portuguese man who had got his visa through the lottery became the suspect in a series of fatal shootings in Rhode Island and Massachusetts (Bloomberg Law).
The appeals judges wrote that "we do not endorse the Department's failure to open the lottery registration period". Even so, they thought the law firm was unlikely to win, chiefly because it isn't a lottery applicant itself. Their decision does not close the case or end the programme: the appeal goes on, and things could still change (Bloomberg Law; Fragomen).
What will be different when it opens
- A US$1 entry fee: under a new rule, each entry costs US$1, paid online as you submit it (Camp Legal). Until now, entering was free.
- A passport is required: a final rule in force since 10 April 2026 says the main applicant must enter the details of a valid, unexpired passport and upload a scan of its photo and signature page (EIG Law; GT Law).
What to prepare now, before the form opens
The entry window normally lasts only about a month, and the final days are the busiest. Have these ready before it opens:
- A valid passport for the main applicant. No passport yet? Apply now, because a Nepali passport takes time.
- A recent digital photo of everyone on the entry: you, your spouse and every unmarried child under 21, even those who won't move with you. Each photo must be a square, recent JPEG of 240 kB or less; follow the State Department's photo requirements. Our free DV photo tool crops it to 600×600 pixels and keeps it under 240 kB, right on your phone. Don't reuse an old photo.
- Proof that you qualify: a high school education or its equivalent, or qualifying work experience (USA.gov). The State Department has long defined this as 12 years of formal schooling, so in Nepal you should plan on having completed Class 12 (+2), not just SEE. Confirm this in the DV-2027 instructions once they're out.
- A way to pay US$1 online, for example a dollar card from your bank.
- Family details: full names, dates of birth (switch BS dates to AD with our Nepali date converter) and places of birth for everyone on the entry.
- An email address that you control, not one belonging to an agent.
Official times are given in US Eastern Time. Nepal is 10 hours 45 minutes ahead of it from November to March, and 9 hours 45 minutes ahead while the US is on daylight saving time.
How to check the EDV result (there is no Nepal name list)
Every year, posts claiming to show the "EDV result Nepal name list" spread fast. No official name list exists, for Nepal or anywhere else:
- Results appear only on the official site, dvprogram.state.gov, under Entrant Status Check, where you look yours up with your confirmation number (USA.gov).
- The State Department never contacts winners by letter or email, and it won't ask for money before you apply (USA.gov).
- Lost your confirmation number? The official site can retrieve it. Don't pay an agent to "find" your result.
DV-2027 results can't exist until the entry period has opened and closed, so any "EDV 2027 result" doing the rounds now is fake.
How to avoid EDV scams
- You can enter only on the official site, dvprogram.state.gov. Until that site says otherwise, any other website or Facebook page announcing "EDV 2027 is open" is wrong.
- No one can register you ahead of time, and no agent can raise your odds. Winners are picked at random.
- The official fee is US$1. Don't pay anyone for a "guaranteed" or "priority" entry.
- Save your confirmation number yourself when you enter. You need it to check the result, so don't leave it only with an agent.
- Get your photo and details exactly right, and enter once: duplicate entries are disqualified.
