DV lottery photo requirements

For the online DV entry, the U.S. Department of State asks for a digital image that is:

The photo itself must be in colour, taken within the last 6 months, in front of a plain white or off-white background, in full-face view with a neutral expression and both eyes open. Your head, from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head, must be between 50% and 69% of the image height. Eyeglasses are no longer allowed, except in rare medical cases. How to make your DV photo

  1. Take the photo against a plain white or off-white wall, in even light, looking straight at the camera. Leave space around your head and shoulders so there is room to crop.
  2. Choose the photo above. The tool opens on the DV size: 600 × 600 pixels.
  3. Drag to move and pinch (or use Zoom) until your head, chin to top of hair, fits between the two ovals. Use Straighten if your head is tilted.
  4. Check the result line: 600 × 600 pixels, JPEG, 240 kB or less. Then download it and upload that file in your entry.

Every person on the entry needs their own photo: you, your spouse and each unmarried child under 21, even if they won't move with you (see the EDV guide).

Interview photos: two 2×2 inch prints

If you are selected, each DV applicant brings two identical photos to the interview, printed on photo quality paper, 2 × 2 inches (51 × 51 mm). Choose 2×2 inch print and download the 4×6 print sheet: two photos on one 4 × 6 inch sheet, ready to print at a photo studio.

A cropping tool, not a photo editor

This tool only crops, rotates, straightens and resizes. It does not smooth skin, change colours or remove backgrounds, because the State Department says photos must not be digitally enhanced or altered to change your appearance. If your background is not plain white or off-white, take the photo again.

The State Department also has its own free photo tool that crops a photo to 600 × 600 pixels. Whichever you use, a State Department employee makes the final decision on your photo: no tool can promise it will be accepted.

Need a passport size photo instead? Use the passport size photo maker (Nepal 35 × 45 mm).

Frequently asked questions

What size is the DV lottery photo?
A square JPEG of 600 × 600 pixels, 240 kB or less. Your head, chin to top of head, must be 50% to 69% of the image height, on a plain white or off-white background.
How do I make my DV photo under 240 kB?
This tool does it for you. It saves the photo as a JPEG and lowers the quality step by step until the file is 240 kB or less, then shows the final size before you download. A 600 × 600 photo is usually well under the limit.
Can I take my DV photo with a phone?
You may take the photo yourself, though the State Department recommends a professional photo service and says low quality mobile phone photos and snapshots are not acceptable. Use a sharp photo, even light and a plain white or off-white background.
Can I wear glasses in the DV photo?
No. Eyeglasses are no longer allowed in new visa photos, except in rare cases where they cannot be removed for medical reasons, with a signed medical statement.
Can I use an old photo for the DV lottery?
No. The photo must have been taken within the last 6 months. To scan an existing photo, it must be 2 × 2 inches and scanned at 300 pixels per inch.
Does every family member need a photo?
Yes: you, your spouse and each unmarried child under 21 need their own photo on the entry, even if they will not move with you.
Is my photo uploaded to your server?
No. The photo is opened, cropped and saved entirely in your browser. It never leaves your phone or computer, and it is not stored.
Will my photo be accepted?
No tool can promise that. This tool makes the file the right size, shape and weight; whether the photo itself is acceptable is decided by the U.S. Department of State.
