Important details about WES evaluation for Nepali students
A few of you must have heard of WES evaluation before, which stands for World Education Services. While for some, it may be a new term. But don’t worry; we will learn about WES evaluation in this article. We will also come to know why WES evaluation is required for students intending to pursue higher studies in countries like the USA, Canada, etc. We will also find out the requirements of WES evaluation, try to understand the different types of WES evaluations available, and also try to analyze which type of WES application will be suitable for you. Furthermore, we’ll discuss the WES application fees.
Why WES?
1. Standardizes credentials
First, it is necessary, as WES Evaluation ensures that the credentials issuing from Nepal are evaluated and standardized in compliance with the set of requirements internationally. As such, this is very important since the educational systems of different countries vary, and WES covers that gap through standard evaluation.
2. University Requirements
Secondly, most of those universities and colleges abroad, especially in countries like the USA and Canada, would require students to submit a WES evaluation of their academic credentials at the time of admission. For example, Nepal’s education system follows a different credit system from that of the USA. So to ensure compatibility and understanding, Nepali students need to convert their academic credentials into the credit system used by the universities they’re applying to in the USA. The WES evaluation provides this conversion, enabling foreign institutions to easily understand the credit system of Nepal and make informed decisions during the admissions process.
3. Credential Verification
Last but not least, it’s required because WES evaluation provides verification of the authenticity and validity of academic documents. It assures foreign institutions that the credentials provided by Nepali students are genuine and accurately represent their educational background.
Types of WES evaluation
When we go into the process of WES evaluation, it’s important to understand that there are two primary types of WES evaluation: document-by-document and course-by-course. Let’s explore which evaluation is required for which type of student.
1. Document-by-Document Evaluation
- This type of evaluation provides a general overview of your academic credentials without going into specific course details.
- It’s typically sufficient for both Nepali and international undergraduate students. Institutions at this level are primarily interested in overall academic achievement rather than course-specific equivalencies.
- Document-by-document evaluation focuses on verifying the authenticity of your documents and providing a summary of your education in a format easily understood by foreign institutions.

2. Course-by-Course Evaluation
- Course-by- Course evaluation offers a detailed analysis of each individual course you’ve completed, including its credit value, level, and equivalency to the education system of the country you’re applying to.
- Â This type of evaluation is more critical for both Nepali and international graduate students, especially those applying to specialized fields where specific course requirements may need to be met for admission.
- Graduate programs often require a deeper understanding of your academic background, including course content and level, to assess your readiness for advanced studies.

WES Application Fees
- Regarding the fees for the WES evaluation, there are two types of evaluation payment options available: WES ICAP and WES Basic.
- First is WES ICAP, which stores and sends the evaluated transcript to the direct university of the student’s choice. However, this is highly recommended since it saves students the extra burden of sending the transcript by themselves. However, in the case of WES Basic, the evaluated transcript is not stored, and the transcript needs to be sent by the student to the university at an extra cost.
- Below are the fee charges for both types of evaluations.
Conclusion
In a nutshell, WES evaluation has great significance for Nepali students, as well as international students willing to pursue their higher education outside of their home country, in terms of standardization, meeting university requirements, and document authenticity.
